Waze is a Smartphone enabled GPS software that works on tablets to provide navigation information, travel times and route details. First developed by an Israeli company with Ehud Shabtai, Amir Shinar and Uri Levine as the founders.
Google sometime in 2013 acquired Waze mobile that popularized the software. The App can deliver real-time traffic and map tracking services to its users.
Within the same year (2013), the app won the Mobile World Congress Best Overall App award against other apps like Dropbox and Flipboard. This software supports cross-platform OS and devices like;
- BlackBerry 10
- Windows Phone 8 and above.
So far only 13 countries are equipped enough to support Waze in its full potential. This is because they have a full base map. These countries are Germany, United States, Belgium, Ecuador, United Kingdom, Israel, Canada, Italy, Netherlands, France, Colombia, South Africa, Chile, and Panama. The plan to further incorporate more cities is still in place.
How Waze Works
Waze works by getting repositories of feedback on routes from its users. Users leave feedbacks on the app about the fastest or shortest route to a destination.
Waze then collates the data for routes taken whilst the app was open for each user. This is why when your settings are set for the possible optimal route, a list of suggestions come up. Based on your preferences, you can make a better driving decision.
These route suggestions come from an average of these routes being taken on a real-time basis. As such the algorithm isn’t all so independent of errors, these errors may be from one of the following: map error or incorrect speed/traffic data.
Note: Waze is a social navigation tool and it is not advised to be used by public service cars, bicycles or trucks. It is also not advised to use it when making special trips. It only works best for regular trips and commuting i.e. the more you drive with the app open, the better your navigation details become more accurate.
